about

"Power Shift" is inspired by the work of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as well as the record number of women voted into the U.S. 116th Congress in 2018. I was strongly influenced by the music of Fela Kuti in this tune, both with the groove and the lyrics. I created the bass line in the introduction following a good dose of listening to Fela, and (as I often do) wrote socially conscious lyrics with him in mind. My lyrics are a tad different than his however, as he was a renowned sexist!

May the women and transgender people of this century keep pushing forward. And to everyone: "Embrace the 'Power Shift'"!

lyrics

Let me tell you something about a shift, in the powers that be.
Mainly, mankind.

Yea, many many men fear for their way of life, their women disenfranchised.
Get a get a wage, beneath their skills, eight tenths for each male dollar earned.
Lookin and a leerin', with mannish menace mind, testosterone rules the land.
Mercy on the women, who stand strong, there are many who deem her actions wrong.

CHORUS: It’s a, power shift
Men scared of a, power shift
116th Congress, power shift
Chauvinism losing ground, power shift

CHORUS

CHORUS (2x)

Defend her, and them too, the system will renew,
Me too and you too, it is beneficial.
Give voice to all women, LGBQ millions,
Social injustice must be confronted.
Praise for the fighter bring us all higher.
Mmm mmm, bring us all higher, higher, higher, higher, higher.

Our wives and our daughters deserve lives with respect, men see all your sisters, and change your behavior.

Embrace the, Power shift!
Power shift!
Power shift!
Power shift!

People, my people, listen to me say, Congress changes it's face today.
Yes, you’re willing willing to risk the status quo, undeterred by sexist souls.
Change laws, for you, and all, I applaud, applying pressure to our culture’s flaws.
I’m indebted to your service, impediments are vast, my wish for you is strength unabashed.
